Battle Studies

2010-03-26-2232251Say what you will of John Mayer and what you know of him from controversial tabloids, interviews and his incessant tweets, but wow—the man is a brilliant musician.

Reid and I had the opportunity to attend his Battle Studies concert at San Jose’s HP Pavillion last Friday, and I was enraptured the entire time he was on stage. The concert was much less theatrical than, say, John Legend’s Evolver concert; Mayer doesn’t strike me as a showman despite his penchant for inane ramblings woven into his set lists and his whole set is centered around the music.

He was right when he said during the concert that it was amazing that you could have 15,000 people in a stadium enjoy the music of one person’s acoustic guitar. The heart of the matter is that regardless of who John Mayer is and what he says or does, the music he plays is kind of amazing.

(That said, I am tickled pink that Mayer makes what my friends and I call an “o noes!” face when he sings. D: O noes!)

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite John Mayer songs which he unfortunately did not sing at the concert. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is the most bittersweet song I know; the mental image conjured from the title alone evokes the emotions surrounding the music and lyrics. I particularly like this recorded live version; it sounds much more raw than the studio-recorded one on the album.

Oh, nerds <3

I thought Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s Empire State of Mind was catchy, but then all the parodies started coming out, proving the original to be less than.. original.

Darth Vader’s Galactic Empire State of Mind:

The New Dork - Entreprenuer State of Mind

The best, of course, is Arden and Justin’s version: “In Tahoeeeeeee… These lights will expire you, in Tahoe, Tahoe!”

Oh, and while we’re at it, here’s the Star Wars spoof of Ke$sha’s Tik Tok… just because.

Phish Concert Phun?

TAGS: None

I don't know what's going on.

I don't know what's going on.

My manager scored some baller VIP box seats for the Phish concert today at Shoreline Amphitheatre. I’m told that most people fight for lawn seating at Shoreline, so this VIP entrance and complimentary buffet thing on top of good seats is kind of awesome. Woot, thanks LM!

I’m also told that you need to smoke weed to “get” Phish and most “phans” would be high. Well, there were definitely a lot of joints getting passed around. Since Phish seems to be what people call a true jam band, Reid and I spent most of the time trying to figure out what was going on. I had a good time though, and their live music is a lot better than I expected from watching online recorded clips of past performances. They played for nearly an hour and a half straight, stringing together their song with very few breaks in the music, and I don’t think they spoke even a single word to address the audience. Strange, but they’re good musicians and sometimes that’s all that’s necessary.

Vienna Teng Concert

Vienna Teng @ Yoshi's Jazz Club

When I first discovered Vienna Teng in 2004, I knew she had to be awesome. After all, we share the same family name. (Yesterday I found out “Vienna Teng” is her chosen stage name, thus confirming the awesomeness of “Teng”.) Upon listening to her music and being blown away by her beautiful narrative lyrics, clear and smooth vocals, and emotional piano music,  I tried to figure out if we were long-lost relativies (I had also done the same for the great late singer Teresa Teng). Alas, we are not.

Nevertheless, I jumped on the opportunity to see her perform at Yoshi’s Jazz Club at Jack London Square, Oakland yesterday night. The venue is pretty intimate, and even in the farthest table possible, our group still had a good view of Vienna. She performed with the Vienna Teng trio, which consisted of herself on piano and keyboards, and two very versatile accompanying artists on everything from cello to drums to electric guitars, and many other odd instruments in between.

While I thought Vienna was amazing on her recorded tracks, her music live is better than I could have ever imagined. Better yet, she was able to connect with her listeners through her witty anecdotes interwoven between songs in the set. And what makes her particularly special to me and others in this area, is that her roots are in the Bay Area; she grew up in Saratoga, studied CS at Stanford, and worked at Cisco before she quit to pursue music professionally. And she’s Taiwanese! +1 point from me.

For her very last song in the encore, she sang the Mandarin Chinese song made famous by Teresa Teng, Green Island Serenade, a capella and in Mandarin. I wonder if Vienna chose her stage name based on Teresa Teng? +10 points. I’m naming my future kid Vienna Teresa Teng. Even if it’s a boy.

ON A BOAT.

In 5 weeks I’ll be on a mini-vacation via cruise ship (ON A BOAT) to Ensenada! The 7 of us are family friends and grew up in the same church until I moved away during junior high, so this will be the first trip I take with any of them as an adult. Since we’ve all graduated and some of us are now working in the Bay Area, only recently have I been getting back in touch with them over coffee and boardgames.

I was a late addition to the plans and really have no idea what we’ll be doing ON A BOAT and in Ensenada for 2-3 days, but I’m simply content to reconnect with old friends and sing “ON A BOAT” for about 4 days straight. I’ll need a nautical-themed pashmina afghan and some flippy-floppies while you’s at Kinko’s straight flippin’ copies.

Here’s the SNL “ON A BOAT” satire/parody I keep referencing. I wonder if T-Pain knows that it’s satire? Hi-larious.
